Barry gets us motoring

Sutton BNI had another lively meeting on 10 March. We welcomed visitor Barry Klaas, of Byron Garage. Over tea before breakfast Barry confessed to me he was a bit puzzled about what BNI was about, but by the time he was given 60 seconds to tell us about his motor maintenance business he was certainly up to speed. He doesn’t pay his people bonuses to rush jobs through the garage, he told us: each job has to be done properly, whether it takes half an hour or four hours. Barry was invited to the meeting by David Lunn, who gave a warm recommendation – needless to say, David’s car is regularly serviced at Byron Garage.

Adrian Frost was another visitor – and he has an unusual business model: he distributes his “Local Offers & Discounts” leaflet, in which Sutton and Croydon traders advertise for free. If the advertising brings in some business, Adrian gets a share of the gains.

Visitors bring a buzz to Sutton

There was a buzz in the air at Sutton BNI on 24 February 2011. That came mostly from the visitors we had in the room.

Andrew Copithorne Crainey talked about his house building business, and mentioned he was let down over a carpeting job. Step forward, Spencer Taylor, of SWT Flooring – an instant referral for him!

Nicholas Paul, carpenter, was with us for the first time, and he picked up some referrals. Lesley Fairbrass introduced her Pride Services Group, which does cleaning and building maintenance, and promised another visit.

We also welcomed Andrew Scott, of Acorn Interiors, Adam Alexander, personal trainer, John Elliott-Nabarro, a Utility Warehouse distributor, and Philip Cartwright, of Exquisite Air Charter.

Visitors making a return visit were Steve Cheung – promoting his Plectrum Box business – and Andy Segal, of Martin & Clewes. Four Sutton BNI members have invested in the Los Pandos development in Spain, and last year some of us visited the development on a trip organised by Andy.

We passed 36 referrals, which is roughly double our recent levels.

Week 5 of the Sutton BNI Game

This week, no bonus round had been declared, but nonetheless, it was one of the highest scoring weeks so far.

  • John Sell of JDS Electrical, Alan Johnson of Teknicare and David Goymour of Words for Business all gained 15 points each for their visitors, bringing their teams forward
  • Team 1 and Team 3 both boosted their scores with 30 points worth of external referrals, which I reckon has been caused by the plethora of 121s over the past few weeks
  • John Sell of JDS Electical Ltd and Chris Groom of CalverGroom Financial Management get kudos this week for 23 and 21 points each respectively, the two highest personal scores of the week
  • We had four visitors this week, including one referred to us from head office: Alan Swann of Swann Cleaning Services, Sean Freckleton of Magnate Property Enterprises, Billy West of West Installations Cabling Contractors and Jim Bath of Guild Home Improvements. Thank you to all four. We look forward to meeting you again next week!

A bonus round has been declared for next week. Find out about it here
